PANASONIC LUMIX GH5

First announced at the Photokina Show back in September of 2016 the Panasonic Lumix GH5 is the successors to the highly popular GH4.

Panasonic has now given us the full specifications and release date for the GH5 at the CES Show in Las Vegas.

The GH4 was a game changing camera especially in the video area for cameras of this type and now the GH5 looks set to move things on even further.

The Panasonic GH5 is a mirrorless, micro four thirds camera with interchangeable lenses either from Panasonic or third party manufacturers using lens adapters.

SENSOR

The GH5 has a brand new, 20.3 Mega pixel sensor and has removed the antialiasing filter, this should result in even sharper looking images. Panasonic has also used its latest Venus Engine processor for faster reading and processing.

AUTOFOCUS

An all new Autofocus system now has 225 focus points which also improves the continuous focus tracking.

The GH5 also contains a five axis, in body, stabilization that will work in conjunction with image stabilized lenses.

CAMERA BODY

The GH5 is slightly larger than the GH4 with a width of 138.5mm, height at 98.1mm and depth of 87.4mm. The body is weather sealed and according to Panasonic freeze proof as well.

There are two main dials on top of the camera for selecting shooting modes and image types

along with iso, function and video record buttons.

On the back of the body they have a muli-function wheel, AE/AF button and a new mini joystick for navigating through the options.

On the right hand side of the body the GH5 has dual SD card slots which can be used for overflow, backup or separated to images and video files.

The left hand side of the body houses input sockets for both microphone and headphones as well as a full size HDMI port and USB 3 for faster data transfer.

VIEWFINDER

Being a mirrorless camera the GH5 uses a 0.76 x 3.68m dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) this has also been updated from the GH4 and is said to be one of best EVFs on any camera produced so far.

TOUCHSCREEN

As with most of Panasonics cameras the GH5 has a 3.2”, fully articulating touch screen.

STILL IMAGING

Another improvement on the GH5 is in its high iso capability. The iso range is now from iso 200 to 25,600, for both stills and video.

With and shooting rate of 12 frames per second.

Panasonic has been offering 4K photo modes on most of its camera range. For the GH5 it has upped this to be 6K photo. This will shoot a section of video and then allow you to pick individual frames as 18mp images.

VIDEO

As with its predecessor the GH5 main appeal is in its video capabilities. The GH5 shoots 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, allowing slow motion filming and when used at 1080, full HD, it will go up to 180 frames per second for super slow motion action.

When shooting in 4K the GH5 uses the entire sensor unlike the GH4 which would only use the central portion. This means that there is no cropping in 4K and the lenses will act as intended.

Another new feature is that the GH5 has unlimited video recording time. Most DSLR are limited to around 30 minutes of recording time.
