NIKON D500
The Nikon D500 was the surprise launch of 2016, arriving unannounced as the successor
to the D300s, after almost seven years it was believed that Nikon had abandoned this
camera range.
Launched at the same time as their flagship D5 model the D500 shares many of the
same features of the top of the range camera.
Body size is slightly larger than the D7200 at 147mm x 115mm x 81mm and weighing
760g.
SENSOR
The Nikon D500 has a 20.9MP APSC sensor with no OLPF paired with Nikons latest EXPEED
5 processor.
ISO RANGE
ISO range on the D500 is ISO 100-51,200 which is expandable to ISO 50-1,640,000
SHUTTER SPEED
with a maximum shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second. The D500 will shoot at up to
10 frames per second making it ideal for sports and wildlife photography. Flash sync
speed is 1/250th of a second, with HSS up to 1/8000th is also available.
AUTOFOCUS
Borrowing a lot of the same autofocus features from the D5 the D500 has 153 focus
points with 99 being cross type. Autofocus modes include AF-S, Group Area AF, 3D
Tracking and Face Detection.
VIEWFINDER AND TOUCHSCREEN
The D500 viewfinder has 100% frame coverage with a 1.0x magnification. On the rear
of the body it has a 3.2”, tilting touch screen. The touchscreen allows menu operations
and image scrolling but no focus point touch function.
CONNECTIVITY
Ports on the Nikon D500 include HDMI, USB3 plus headphone and microphone sockets.
The D500 has dual card slots for both SD and XQD cards. Connectivity is via Wi-Fi,
NFC and Bluetooth.
FILE TYPES
Options include J-pegs in Fine, Normal and Basic, RAW files at either 12 or 14 bit
and TIFF files. The Nikon D500’s buffer rate allows for up to 200 RAW frames to be
shot when using the XQD card.
VIDEO
Along with the D5 the D500 became the first Nikon DSLR’s to shoot 4K video. The 4K
video can be shot at 30,25 and 24 frames per second, with 1080 video up to 60 fps.
