NIKON D780
The Nikon D780 is set to be the replacements for the popular D750 launched in 2014.
Much loved by wedding and portrait photographers the D750 offered a full frame DSLR
without the massive pixel count and price tag of the D850.
With this in mind it looks like Nikon are updating the D700 range without making
many significant changes, working on the ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ principle.
SENSOR
Sensor wise the D780 will have a 24 megapixel, full frame sensor, which is virtually
the same as in the D750. It should have a newer processor speeding up operations
and giving better RAW image processing.
ISO
The ISO range could be improved from the D750 bringing it closer the ISO 64-25600
range found on the D850.
AUTOFOCUS
Autofocus, the D750 had 51 AF points and this should be improved for the D780 hopefully
pushing it up around the 100+ AF points.
TOUCHSCREEN
Being a DSLR the D780 will have an optical viewfinder but the tilting, 3.2” touchscreen
will be improved now having a 2.1 million dot resolution.
It is also expected that the menu system will be updated more like the one on the
Z series of cameras.
VIDEO
Video capabilities are probably going to be the biggest improvement, where the D750
shot 1080p at 60fps the D780 will shoot 4K at 30fps and 1080p at up to 120fps.
Dual SD UHSII card slots.
The D780 will have a F-mount lens system, the newer Z-mount is purely for the mirrorless
Z series of cameras. With the majority of Nikon users being DSLR shooters it makes
perfect sense to continue to service their main customer base and make new cameras
for the massive F-mount lens range available.
Price wise the D780 is expected to be around the £2,000/$2,000 mark.
With no major changes over the D750 who is this camera for?
The D750 has been the workhorse for many wedding and portrait photographers but is
now over five years old. Photographers looking to update their gear will definitely
be looking at the D780.
The other advantage is that the price for D750’s will now go down so it could be
a great time to pick up a new one or look for second hand bargains from photographers
who upgrade.
