CANON 1DX MKIII
Canon has got the jump on Nikon by announcing their new flagship DSLR the 1DX MkIII.
With Nikon not expected to even announce the D6 until sometime in February this year.
BODY
Body wise the 1DX MkIII is very similar to the MkII with a couple of additions that
we’ll look at in a while.
SENSOR
The 1DX MkIII has a new, 20.1, full frame, sensor and is coupled with Canon’s ne
DIGIC X processor.
SHUTTER SPEED
Maximum shutter speed is 1/8000th of a second and the 1DX will shoot at 16fps when
using the optical viewfinder but this jumps up to 20fps if the camera is used in
live view. The extra frame rate is great but I do wonder how many sports photographers
will want to shoot using the rear screen to gain an extra 4 frames per second?
AUTOFOCUS
As with all Canons the AF system is fantastic. The 1DX takes advantage of Canon’s
dual pixel AF and now offers 191 AF points. These are now arranged in a wider, grid
style making choosing an AF point easier.
The subject tracking has a learning function that will track faces etc. with much
greater accuracy.
Sticking with the AF on the rear of the camera the AF ‘ON’ button now incorporates
a tiny tracking pad that allows you to move the AF point by simply moving your thumb
across it.
ISO
The ISO range is ISO 100-102400.
TOUCHSCREEN
On the rear is a 3.2” fixed touchscreen that offers both function and menu control.
CARD SLOTS
The 1DX MkIII has dual CF Express card slots allowing faster data transfer. Coupled
with the new processor the 1DX has a RAW+Jpeg buffer of over 1000 shots.
FILE TYPES
One of the most interesting innovations is that the 1DX MkIII can shoot HEIF files.
The High Efficiency Image Format records 10 bit files compared to Jpegs 8 bit files
and has a compression double that of Jpeg. This allows higher quality images to be
recorded and stored in a file half the size of Jpegs.
VIDEO
Video is available in 4K at 60fps and there is the capability for 5.5K video to be
recorded as well.
Being aimed at sports and wildlife photographers the 1DX MkIII has great contectivity
with built in wifi and Bluetooth as well as an expandable wifi range when using the
additional aerial unit.
Both Canon and Nikon needed to release the new models this year due to the Olympics
being in Tokyo, with both manufacturers being Japanese they want sports photographers
to use the best they have to offer.
Price wise the 1DX MkIII is £6,400 or $6,499 for the body only.
