NIKON D850

NIKON’S ANNOUNCEMENT

On their 100th birthday Nikon have announced that the replacement for the D810 is in development. This probably means that we can expect a full announcement in August and possibly the camera itself in September of 2017.

The new camera will be called the D850 and replaces the D810 that has been around since 2014.

Nikon’s announcement says that the D850 will ‘exceed expectations’. Hopefully this will prove true with cameras like Sony’s A9 making a serious impact in this market.

POSSIBLE SPECIFICATIONS

The only clues to specifications, from Nikon, is the release of a short video showing an 8K timelapse film, shot on a D850.

Other indications for the D850 can be gleaned from current Nikon models and what other manufacturers are offering.

The original D800 used a 36.3 megapixel full frame sensor, this was carried over to the D810. In the meantime Canon’s 5Ds offered a 50.6 megapixel sensor and Sony a 42.2 megapixel on the A&RII.

For the D850 Nikon has to be raising the megapixel count to somewhere in the 45 to 50 megapixel range.

Autofocus will probably be the 153 AF point system currently found on the flagship D5 and D500 models.

The D810 offers an ISO range of ISO 64-51200. This will possibly stay the same on the D850 but it would be interesting to see Nikon reduce the base ISO down to ISO 50 or lower.

Shooting rate is another area that Nikon can upgrade, a 10 frames per second would bring the D850 in line with the D500.

The D850 will almost certainly feature the tilting touchscreen from the D750, D500 and D7500 cameras.

Video must feature 4K although like on other Nikon models it is unlikely to use the full sensor, instead cropping in to just a central portion. We do already know that an 8K Timelapse feature will be included.

We will have to wait until Nikon officially announces the full details for the D850 but I have put together a ‘Guessifications’ lists below to keep us going for now.
