CANON EOS 6D Mk II
OVERVIEW
Canon has announced the release of the EOS 6D Mk II, replacing the original 6D of
four years ago. The 6D Mk II is Canon’s entry level, full frame DSLR, sitting below
the 5D Mk IV in the range.
SENSOR
Sensor wise the 6D Mk II has a 26.2 megapixel sensor, up from the 20 megapixel sensor
in the original 6D. This has been coupled with Canon’s latest DIGIC 7 processor.
AUTOFOCUS
Autofocus has also been improved from the original 11 AF in the 6D to a respectable
45 AF points, all of which are cross type. This is the same autofocus system that
is found on the Canon 80D but whereas the 80D has an APS-C sensor giving almost full
AF coverage in the viewfinder, the 6D Mk II’s full size sensor means that the AF
points are grouped more centrally.
Canon has added its Dual Pixel AF to the 6D Mk II allowing the sensors pixels to
act as phase detectors as well as for imaging.
ISO RANGE
ISO range has been improved giving ISOs from 100-40,000 natively.
SHUTTER SPEED
Sutter speed has a maximum of 1/4000th of a second and will now shoot at up to 6.5
frames per second compared to the 6D’s 4 fps.
CAMERA BODY
Body wise there is very little difference between the old and newer models except
for the addition of a dedicated AF button on the top.
LCD TOUCHSCREEN
The other major addition is a fully articulating touchscreen replacing the fixed
LCD on the original camera.
IMAGE STABILSATION
The 6D Mk II has built in 5 axis stabilisation for both stills and video use.
VIDEO
Talking of video many expected the 6D Mk II to be able to shoot in 4K. Unfortunately
this is not the case with it only offering video at 1080p up to 60 frames per second.
It does however have a 4K timelapse mode, allowing high quality timelapse movie files.
STORAGE & CONNECTIVITY
For storage the 6D Mk II has a single SD card slot. Connectivity is well covered
with built in GPS, WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth options. There is an input for an external
microphone but no headphone output jack.
